Pawlik Automotive 21 Time Winners Best Auto Repair In Vancouver

Mark: Hi, it's Mark Bossert from Top Local. We're here with Bernie Pawlik of Pawlik Automotive in Vancouver and we have an announcement as they've been voted again as Best Auto Repair in Vancouver. How're you doing today Bernie?

Bernie: Well, with that kind of news, I'm super happy. It's awesome being acknowledged for that.

Mark: So, it's 21 times now. Twenty one times voted as Best Auto Repair in Vancouver and this is the 10th time winning Best Auto Repair in Vancouver from the Georgia Straight newspaper. Who votes for these?

Bernie: They're all readers. It's a Reader Choice Award program. And obviously these would be customers of ours who vote. So since we're not like you know, a hugely branded company like well I won't say and names, but you know there'll be customers of ours who vote, who are readers of that paper.

Mark: What do you think the value of this is?

Bernie: Well, I mean, for us. I remember the first time we won back in 2008, I was thinking, oh this is kind of nice, but I'm just kind of a humble quiet guy, something, whatever. But then I started to get some customers coming in, I saw you in the Georgia Straight. I realized, hey this is actually a pretty good acknowledgment. And so the value for us is especially after 10 times is that we're recognized as being a really awesome good auto repair shop - like best in Vancouver according to our customers. So that's a really awesome thing and you know, for people, it holds us accountable too. I mean, I would like next year to be the best auto repair shop. So we've got to keep up the good work and keep people happy.

Mark: So why do you think people got for you?

Bernie: I think the work that we do is good but I think a lot of it is how we communicate with our customers and who we are as people. I mean, are we the best auto repair shop in Vancouver in terms of work. I can't say for sure. I mean I know a lot of really really good shops in Vancouver and there's lots of great shops all over the world but I think, you know to me, it's just the relationship we have with our customers. I think allows this to happen.

Mark: So 21 times. That's a lot of years. What does it take to be able to do that for that many times, that long, you'll be able to run your business and keep your staff dedicated to looking after your customers?

Bernie: Yeah, I mean we just, to me I'm always very careful and I can't say that we've satisfied everyone a hundred percent. I mean they're all, we're human beings. They're human beings. Sometimes personalities don't work. Sometimes a job might not go as expected but I think we try really hard to make sure that people are happy and I go out of my way most of the time, to make sure that people are happy with what we do. And if something happens where I really feel like, no this is not our issue, I'll say so and I you know, that's kind of what I can say about that. But we do care that people are happy with the work that we do.

Mark: And do you feel like honesty is a big part of this?

Bernie: Absolutely. Honesty, transparency and giving people options too. You know, we have a lot of people who come to us, who come in, they may have not had their car serviced in a long time and because they haven't found someone they trust or they're too busy or well for whatever reason. And there may be a huge list of things that the car could us to get back into really premium shape but we'll prioritize things and maybe, you know you'll need to do these two or three items like right now. These are important. Six months from now, you can do these. Down the road, you can do this. Depends on your budget, what you want to do. Some people say, yeah I want you to fix everything. Other people going, you know, I'm going to get rid of the car. We just leave that option open to people. So we just leave that option open to people. So I think that's a really big contributor to how people like to deal with us.

Mark: Do you guys ever just do the work and not let the customer know and then surprise them?

Bernie: No we don't. We have a mission statement. At least if we do that and a customer says, Hey I don't want to pay for that, they can walk out without paying because, well of course, they're probably be a conversation. But we have a mission statement that says you'll never pay more that the last estimate. So you know, if we tell you, Hey Mark, you're going to be paying 200 dollars including taxes for this inspection we're going to do in your car. That's the most you can expect the bill to be unless we've phoned you up and said, of Hey by the way you need this, this and this and its going to cost this amount of money. And you say ok I want you to do that for that amount of money. Then we'll make sure we have agreement so when you come in here, you know if you're expecting a thousand dollar bill. It's going to be a thousand dollars or less. It's not going to be over that.

Bernie: Absolutely.

Why A Podcast

Mark: Hi, it’s Mark from Top Local, we’re here with Bernie Pawlik, Pawlik Automotive in Vancouver, Vancouver’s best auto service experience. Eighteen time winners of Best Auto Repair in Vancouver as voted by their customers and fixing and repairing, maintaining cars in Vancouver for 38 years. How’re you doing Bernie?

Bernie: Doing very well.

Mark: So I guess we want to address why are we doing a podcast?

Bernie: Why are we doing a podcast? Well, we have been doing videos, as many of you have seen, we’ve been doing videos for several years now, it’s been great for our business because it’s brought a lot of customers through our door. But there’s also a lot of people around the world who watch these videos and so I realize there’s a value that people are getting out of our education that we’re providing, so that’s why we’re going to use podcasts. So you can get more hopefully useful information. 

Mark: And what kind of viewpoint are we coming from?

Bernie: We’re coming from the viewpoint, I mean as a person, as a shop owner, I really believe in maintenance. Maintaining your car’s really important to make sure that it’s reliable. So it’ll start, and when you want to hit the brakes, your brakes work, so we avoid, we try to take the surprises out of your car life at our shop.

So the viewpoint we’re coming from is first of all maintenance, but we’re also showing repairs that are interesting, things that are going wrong with cars. Just a wide variety of issues, different brands, whatever I think is interesting to people. Common problems, things we’ve helped people out where we may have saved a lot of money on certain repairs for people. 

Mark: And so, we’ve talked about many different vehicles, brands, models, different ranges of years and some of them have some pretty significant reliability issues. We’ve gotten some pretty hot comments on our videos over the years. What’s you response to that?

Bernie: Well, I know there’s some people that just defend their brand name and they think we’re saying bad things about it. I'm not here to defend any particular brand of car, actually I like them all. I mean, I find working on cars fascinating. One thing I didn’t mention, I think you know, even growing up I found automobiles and trucks are just fascinating, the way they work, they just keep getting more and more interesting.

I find all makes and models are good but we’re just calling out what we see. You know if there’s a certain vehicle where spark plugs keep blowing out of the engine, you’ll know who I’m talking about, we’re going to talk about that. And if you’re going to buy a vehicle like this, or if you own it, nothing wrong, it’s just what and how it was engineered and built and it’s just something that needs to be fixed. So that’s the perspective we come from.

We have no brand preference. I mean I own a wide variety of vehicles, some I’d recommend others to buy, some I wouldn’t. Do I make the right choices? I don’t know, I just buy them because I like them. Everyone has their own reasons. It’s kind of like a car can often be like a fashion statement for some people, other people as long as they get from A to B in what’s reliable that’s all that counts. So yeah, we’re just here to call it like we see it.

We Service New Cars

We love servicing new vehicles and always appreciate working with the clean, shiny and newly painted undercarriage and suspension components.

Many of our clients bring their new vehicles to us for service but some take their new cars to the dealer. Is it because they feel their warranty will be voided if the dealer doesn’t service it? Is it because the glitzy feel of the dealership somehow pulls on them and makes them feel like these are the folks who will best service this car? Were they told that their car must be serviced by the dealer? Or perhaps, after years of fixing their old car we are thought of as the “old car repair shop.”

Whatever the reason it is time to bust a few myths:

Myth 1:

My warranty will be void if anyone other than the dealer services my car.

Fact: Any qualified auto service facility can perform the manufacturers recommended maintenance and your warranty remains valid. By the way it is illegal for anyone selling you a new car to state that you must have your car serviced at their dealership.

Myth 2:

If there is a warranty related problem the dealer won’t take care of me because I have done my service elsewhere.

Fact:

    The dealer is obliged to repair any warranty concerns that the manufacturer authorizes and most are happy to do so as it is business for them.

Myth 3:

The dealer knows my car better. It’s new technology and they have the tools to fix it.

Fact:

    While dealer technicians are specifically trained on their type of vehicle all cars function the same way with only subtle differences. We have state of the art equipment and repair information that is equal to or better than the dealer.

Myth 4:

If there is a recall only the dealer will know that.

Fact:

    We have a state of the art database which lists all manufacturers maintenance schedules as well as recalls. We look these over every time your car is brought in for service.

I hope that this sheds some light for you and helps you make a choice as to who services your car.

As a further advantage to dealing with us we are your 3rd party advocate to be certain that your vehicle is being properly serviced and any warranty related concerns are brought to your attention. So much of your car is hidden and unless someone mentions a concern you are unlikely to know that it is needed.

If you like the service and value that you get from the dealership by all means stick with them; however do know that you have a choice, and I believe that we offer a fabulous choice, superior to the dealership.

What We Do – A BNI Presentation

Good Morning, I’m Bernie from Pawlik Automotive.

Pawlik Automotive is an auto service shop located in the Marpole area of Vancouver, BC. We’ve been in business since 1991 which makes us 20 years old this year. We service most makes of cars and light trucks and we do pretty much all the maintenance and repairs that your car will need. What we don’t do is bodywork, windshields and detailing.

I want to speak today on a few aspects of our business that are unique.

Let’s face it there are a lot of auto repair shops out there but there are several things that make Pawlik Automotive an excellent choice for servicing your vehicle.

Wholistic Approach

We take what I call a wholistic approach to vehicle service. Auto Inspection reportWe look at the whole car, evaluate it and let you know what service is required now and what is required in the future. The basis of that service comes via this very colorful and detailed inspection form. Having us as your partner in vehicle service undoubtedly saves you money in the long run.

An Honest Mechanic

We don’t use a heavy handed or fear based tactics as a way of selling service.

    I can give an example from this week: we had a client who complained that her brakes were making a noise. I drove the car and noted a grinding noise at some times: it was intermittent and coming from her front brakes. Upon inspection we found 4 mm remaining on the brake pads and the rotors were in good condition. 4 mm on this car could last another 20 to 30,000 kilometers and there was no safety issue involved. We let her know that we could replace her pads & rotors now and eliminate her noise or she could safely leave them and live with the noise. She opted to leave them, a $500 sale walked out the door while our integrity remained intact!

Fleet Maintenance

Another area of specialty for us is fleet maintenance: essentially these are vehicles used for business and most often these would be trades companies: plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, rubbish removal companies and garden maintenance companies just to name a few.

What makes our service so valuable to fleets is our thorough inspections along with accurately recording the work needed and booking future appointments along with reminding them of when service is needed.

    I can give an example of how we’ve helped one of our fleet clients: Action Integrated SecurityWe service a company called Action Integrated Security who have about 15 vehicles, mostly heavily loaded vans. When they started bring their vehicles to us they were in pretty bad shape but we got them maintained to our high standards.
    One area of concern remained and that was that some of their vans were eating brakes at an alarming rate and this was in spite of our use of the best quality brake parts available. After a few of their trucks ran into horrifically expensive brake jobs which could have been prevented by inspections, the company’s owner, upon my suggestion now brings all of their vehicles to us for every service.
    They had been going to quick lubes for oil services as this was convenient for them as their technician did not have to be without a vehicle. Unfortunately quick lubes don’t look at the whole vehicle and much was being missed. We now inspect their brakes at every service and note any quick wearing brakes so they can be dealt with before they wear out. This is saving them a lot of money.

Diesel Vehicles

Diesel cars and diesel trucks are another area of specialty for us. Many auto repair shops don’t do diesels but we love them and have invested in the equipment and education to diagnose and repair them properly.

    An example of some of our diesel service is on 6 liter Ford diesels:Ford Diesel Head Gasket Repairs these are very common in pick up trucks from 2003 to 2006 model years. Unfortunately this engine is not reliable stock but with proper repairs it can be made bulletproof and we have done this to a number of these engines.

Proper Diagnosis

Doing proper diagnosis is very important to fixing a modern vehicle and it is a big part of our business and it’s something that we do very well. There are many expensive parts to go wrong so it is essential to take the time to find out what the exact cause is so that our client’s money is not wasted.

    Here’s an example of the value of diagnosis: A couple of days ago we had a Dodge truck with a check engine lamp on and it’s engine running with a slight misfire. His previous shop had not done diagnosis but had installed many parts in hopes of fixing the concern: new spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap & rotor and a fuel injector in 1 cylinder.
    They had charged him a fair amount of money and while some of these parts may have been needed they had not solved his concern. We diagnosed his concern and found a bad intake valve in #8 cylinder which required some engine work. Chances are most of the other parts were unnecessary and were a waste of his money: had this vehicle owner done diagnosis first he would have undoubtedly saved hundreds of dollars.
